The reason Apple is not slowing down iPads with degraded batteries is because iPads come with much bigger batteries, so even if their batteries get degraded over time, they don't seem to run into issues like the iPhones such as unexpected shutdowns.

Apple is slowing down the older iPhones because over time the battery runs out of capacity, and can not supply enough power to the iPhone in times of peak processor usage, which can lead to the unexpected shutdowns.

The $ 50 discount comes following something of a furore relating to Apple's power management systems and their decision to down - clock older iPhones when their batteries are unable to provide the required power to keep them running optimally.

Because those older batteries are incapable of handling peak current draws with the same effectiveness of iPhones with newer batteries and more efficient processors, they run the risk of the device powering down to prevent damage to its internal components.

Earlier this week, Apple admitted that it is deliberately throttling the performance of older iPhones running newer versions of iOS, explaining that artificially limiting the speed of those devices was necessary to prevent aging lithium ion batteries from failing.

This week, Apple confirmed that it makes iPhones run slower as their batteries age.

Still, it will run most iPhones into the ground, so the battery life isn't bad.

Thanks to beefier batteries, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge last longer on a charge than the latest iPhones, though other phones run even longer.

The phone with the biggest battery — a massive 3,100 mAh — the OnePlus One ran circles around both iPhones, lasting an epic 13 hours and 16 minutes on AT&T's network.

For its part, Apple did admit that it is slowing down older iPhones, all in an effort to help keep the battery running longer and to stop random shutdowns.
