The satellite readings show that as sea
ice forms early in the season, wind blowing off the cold Antarctic ice cap pushes it offshore and northward.
This strategy is used to identify ice bands and to constrain which
ices form early during cloud formation, which form later in the prestellar core and which require protostellar heat and / or UV radiation to form.

In order to understand these processes, one of Webb's Director's Discretionary
Early Release Science projects will examine a nearby star -
forming region to determine which
ices are present where.
That's because
ice in the
early solar system is thought to have
formed beyond a «snow line» lying somewhere between Mars and Jupiter.
