Significantly, this water was found near Mars» north pole, but not in its polar
icecaps, indicating that water extends farther than just those areas of trapped water
ice, dust and carbon dioxide.
My hunch is the few large glaciers draw from the central
ice mass through «gateways» and the many smaller glaciers instead form mostly from snowfall on the outside of the ring of mountains around the
icecap.
In other words, the expedition is experiencing the very conditions it set out to study — namely the various kinds of sea
ice that scientists know are increasing around Antarctica, while the
icecaps on Antarctica are known to melt.
So there is a hysteresis jump from
icecap earth (present state) to
ice free earth (eg cretaceous).
If both Greenland and West Antarctica shed the entirety of their
ice burden, global sea levels would rise by 12 to 14 m. Although these
icecaps would not disintegrate within a century, the loss of even a third of their mass — quite plausible if the rate of polar
ice loss continues to double each decade — would force up the oceans by at least 4 m, with disastrous socioeconomic and environmental consequences.
At maximum

During the Earth's
ice ages the Pacific Ocean stored large amounts of carbon, which for some reason it released again close to the last glacial period's end, warming the world and melting most of the
icecaps.
What I am am arguing is that the
icecap is in a non-equilibrium state, and that the survival of late Holocene
ice is a transient state.
As to the Arctic
icecap, the Daily Mail conveniently fails to mention that the 60 % increase in 2013 over 2012 still leaves the
icecap coverage 20 % lower than it was in 1978, when NSIDC's record - keeping on the extent of Arctic
ice began.

ice melts.
Climate News Network: Researchers in the US have identified a new reason for the acceleration in the melting of Greenland's
icecap − the
ice underneath, as it melts and then refreezes, appears to speed up glacial flow.
And they have indicated that the Greenland
icecap each summer becomes more vulnerable to melting because the snows themselves are becoming darker, as more dust blows in from areas that are increasingly
ice free.
Remember that the Eemian
ice from GISP / GRIP / NGRIP / NEEM was deposited at approximately the same altitude and temperature as top of the current
icecap.
These clues include the earlier spring arrivals of migrating birds, earlier blooming of wildflowers and Washington DC's cherry trees, melting glaciers and
icecaps, micro-fossils from cores of mud from the ocean floor, and bubbles of ancient air retrieved from cores of glacial
ice.
