While you can't turn
icon badges on and off for individual apps, you can disable all badges if you want.
There are several new customization options for app
icon badges on the S9.

The third option — «
Badge app
icon» — lets you disable those red dots that show up
on dock
icons.
Badges are dots that are shown along one corner of an app's
icon on your home screen when a notification arrives involving it.
Beyond setting an
icon pack and adjusting your app drawer grid, you can turn back
on our dock, unread
badges or Android O notification dots, and even turn
on a few extra gestures.

on gesture controls, unread count

But former iOS users will be happy to know that Android Oreo now has support for «Unread»
badges on home screen
icons.
In addition, you can choose the notification sound, turn vibrate
on or off, and disable the app
icon badge if you like.
Basically, this puts a small
badge on top of the app's
icon that specifies how many unread notifications you have (much like iOS does by default).
Oreo's notification
badges pick a color for their
badges from the
icon that it'll be sitting
on top of, which means that most of the time, these dots blend into the
icon rather than standing out and reminding you to check your notifications.
Then, tap Notifications and flip the Allow
icon badges switch to «
on.»
As informative as they can be, the new app
icon badges and unread counts
on the Galaxy S9's home screen are a little redundant since Android already has a notification center.
By adding a small
badge to the status bar
icon that displays the exact number of notifications you've received from an app, you'll always be able to stay
on top of things.
You can use the other options here to configure exactly where an app's notifications appear — in the history, in pop - up banners, or as a
badge on the app's
icon.
The first is when you have a

icon — or an actual
icon change — indicating the app needs your attention.
And it applies whether the notification is a
badge on the
icon or a balloon notification.
For apps that notify you by displaying a
badge or symbol
on a system tray

iOS has had notification
badges for a very long time now: it's those small numbers above your app
icons — whether it's
on your home screen
on in your app drawer — that indicate how many unread emails or text messages you have among others.
It introduces «notification dots», the Android version of Apple's red notification
badges in iOS showing the number of un-dismissed notifications
on each app
icon.
Former iOS users will be happy to know that Android Oreo now has support for unread
badges on home screen
icons.
When an app has notifications that the user hasn't yet acted
on, Android Oreo can display a
badge next to this application's
icon.
Or, perhaps you want to see a
badge on the app's
icon but you don't want any notification banners popping up.
Improvements to the already great Android notification system include new channels that let you fine - tune the notifications you want to see, snoozing for those who like to put off until tomorrow, and even notification
badges on your app
icons!
If there are no new notifications, that
icon looks empty and
badge - free (

With this feature activated, any app of your choosing will appear with a small
badge on the corner of its
icon, and within that small
badge is a number that signals how many unread notifications that the app has waiting for you.
You can choose the exact corner
on which the
badge will appear over an app

badge, the color, and the size.
Whenever you have new notifications, the Action Center
icon in the notification area turns white and displays a number

Still, that's an afterthought solution that I'd like to see Google address internally — even if it's just by tossing a little Android
badge on the
icon itself or an Android folder inside of the main app tray.
It could start by taking tips from this iOS 11 concept, which imagines more informative
icon badges and support for complications similar to those
on Apple Watch.
It's easy to enable and use, and Parallel apps have a small orange
badge on their app
icon to denote they're a clone.
Now,
on the lockscreen, even if you clear the item, the app's
icon badge will still show that something's pending.
Either as
badges on icons, or you need to pull down the Notification Center.
