as a brief, violent affair that not only put the outer
planets where they are today but also created the Kuiper belt of small
icy bodies beyond Neptune, gave the
planets scores of oddly orbiting moons, and bombarded the solar system with a rain of asteroids and comets so fierce that it would have cooked all but the deepest subterranean life on early Earth.

icy giant
planets of our solar system, scientists were able to observe «diamond rain» for the first time
as it formed in high - pressure conditions.
With the
icy planets in our solar system, «ice» refers to hydrogen molecules connected to lighter elements, such
as carbon, oxygen and / or nitrogen.
If the early results hold up, this time it's the dwarf
planet Eris's turn to be demoted, and Pluto might have just regained its status
as the largest object in the Kuiper Belt, the ring of
icy bodies beyond Neptune.
And
Planet X could roam
as far
as 600 to 1200 AU, well beyond the Kuiper belt, the region of small
icy worlds that begins at Neptune's edge about 30 AU.

planet, show three different swaths of the
icy surface
as Pluto slowly rotated on its axis.

icy moon is not perfectly spherical — and because it goes slightly faster and slower during different portions of its orbit around Saturn — the giant
planet subtly rocks Enceladus back and forth
as it rotates.

icy fragments would have encircled the solar system's second largest
planet as rings and eventually spalled off small moons of their own that are still there today, says Robin Canup, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo..
As this visualization shows, the icy moon may look tiny next to our own planet, but it's got 2 - to 3 - times as much H2O as we have here on Eart

icy bodies from dust grains to objects the size of dwarf
planets, such
as Pluto.

planet, the arctic ice pack is rapidly melting; the whales are in danger from noise, oil spills and deadly collisions with ships, while global warming is steadily melting their
icy abode and reducing available food.

icy reflective surface like other relatively small, outer Solar System objects,
as the dwarf
planet is observed to have a pink tinge, which is hypothesized to result from chemical changes produced by the effect of radiation on frozen water, methane, and carbon dioxide.
Saturn's
icy 246 - mile - wide moon Mimas (near lower left) appears tiny by comparison to the
planet's rings, but scientists think the all of the small,
icy particles spread over a vast area that comprise the rings are no more than a few times
as massive
as Mimas.
Both objects formed among the rocky and
icy protoplanets beyond the Solar System's «ice line» now located around 2.7 AUs, but the early development of Jupiter apparently prevented such large protoplanets between the gas giant and
planet Mars from agglomerating into even bigger planetary bodies, by sweeping many into pulverizing collisions
as well
as slinging them into the Sun or Oort Cloud, or even beyond Sol's gravitational reach altogether.
