She discusses the ever more globalised
art scene and the growing culture
of biennales and
art fairs, noting that many
of the biennials take place in countries «which are politically and economically problematic or in crisis, and it is about the projection
of one context into another; trying to impose some western
idea of how inspirational
art can be to those people and then leaving that place and not taking any responsibility for the
idea of intellectual freedom they have proposed.»
Ahead
of his time, with so many vague and unformed but interesting
ideas, it is
fair to say that his spatial concept foreshadowed installation and environmental
art and his promotion
of gesture as
art prompted performance as
art.
The new
fair, coinciding with, and within walking distance
of Frieze London, in Regent's Park, was based on the
idea of applying a contemporary approach to selling pre-21st-century
art, from ancient to modern.
Dowell has shown his paintings in a number
of exhibitions around the United States including Safe Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, Sister Gallery, Brooklyn, NY, CANADA, NY, Jack Geary Contemporary, NY, The 2013 ArtPadSF Contemporary
Art Fair, Beta Pictoris, San Francisco, CA, Festival
of Ideas for the New City, The New Museum, New York (2011), and Sara Meltzer Gallery, New York, among others.
«Some [
art fairs] are based on a naïve
idea that if you get a large audience you can achieve more
of a cultural impact... I think that in international exhibitions, more depth is needed — these exhibitions are usually researched and prepared too quickly for that depth to be achieved...
To cement the
idea that this was «a major league show,» said Max Fishko, a managing partner
of Art Market Productions, the Brooklyn company that produced the
fair, «we needed those sales.»
My favourite Basel
art experiences was visiting the Volta
art fair which was situated in an industrial suburb
of Basel and had a very exciting showing
of international cutting edge galleries that took big risks with new avenues
of exploration or had novel
ideas on curation — new
art stars could be seen forming among the interstellar dust — it was good to see my
art friend Martin Brown here with a good one man show at his London based gallery — Fred who were showing here.
It all started 15 years ago with an
idea of a small
art fair.
If artist Robert Rauschenberg and Bell Labs engineer Billy Kluver were still alive today to visit the Contemporary Jewish Museum's new exhibition, «NEAT: New Experiments in
Arts and Technology,» it's a
fair bet they would both be pleased to see the once - radical
ideas they espoused in the 1960s — about breaking down barriers between artists and engineers — thriving in the current work
of the Bay Area digital artists on display.
From the very beginning, his goal was to emphasise the
idea of quality within the field
of new
art and, and to discover and promote emerging artists by, among other things, a highly active exhibition program, the publication
of catalogues, and participation in international
art fairs.
Elsewhere, cocking a snook at the
idea of art as commodity, Matthew Darbyshire has redesigned the
fair's ticket office in lurid pink (inspired, apparently, by the interior
of a certain mobile - phone store) and Gabriel Kuri has replaced the ashtrays with sculptures.
The salon - style hang is both comforting and discomfiting, playing on the
idea of our expectations
of art fairs in general.
With a nod to its inspiration, CLIO
ART FAIR has been created with the
idea of showcasing the careers and achievements
of already affirmed creative minds.
