Sadly, many,
if not all, of the most influential organs of our culture are committed to the cultivation of
Psychological Man as the norm and thus the categories of
therapy as the answer.
If counseling and
therapy are to enable whole - person growth they must use methods that raise the level of physical vitality as well as those which enliven the
psychological dimensions of people's lives.
But even
if this be acknowledged, surely, some will say, when we speak of the personal grace of forgiveness, we are going far beyond what can be documented in any
psychological account of
therapy.
In fact,
if the placebo / expectation component of a treatment is eliminated by means of a hidden administration (unbeknownst to the patient), the
psychological component of the
therapy is absent as well.

While it may seem like making diet and lifestyle recommendations are relatively benign
therapies, I believe that they do have the potential to do physical and
psychological harm, particularly
if they are strict recommendations.
By going to
therapy themselves, therapists can personally experience the reality that the
psychological theory and therapeutic techniques don't matter
if there isn't a strong connection between therapist and client.
If you have a serious injury — physical,
psychological or both — an average of $ 5000 per year for all of your physiotherapy, other
therapies, prescriptions, assistive devices and other needs is just not going to take you very far unless you have a generous private insurance policy.
A study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (2009 vol.77, pp.160 - 173), a publication of the American
Psychological Association, for instance, found that
therapy can help even very chronically unhappy married couples
if both partners are committed to improving their marriage.
It is important to note that
if there are other, associated
psychological issues that have developed along with, as a result of, or prior to the OCD these may require additional
therapy.
Re-assessment periods present a good opportunity for clinicians to re-evaluate whether a client would benefit from different treatment modalities, such as family or group
therapy, or
if an assessment for medication, psychiatric consultation, or
psychological testing is warranted.
