The
works of the 2017
class of image makers produced a thesis exhibition at the Shulamit Nazarian gallery in Los Angeles.
He was a student in Joseph Beuys» master
class when he began to seriously question the role
of the
image in painting, and by 1968 he had formulated the foundation
of his practice in the seminal installation «Raum 19,» which has continued to influence his
work.
The semester will conclude with an online exhibition
of the digital
images, ready for use by New York Times editors, as well as a physical exhibition that will be on display at #infoshow18 at Pratt Manhattan Center on May 11, 2018 as part
of Pratt Shows, an annual series
of year - end shows that offers the public an opportunity to experience the
work of Pratt Institute's graduating
class each spring.
Filmmaker Saul Levine has left his professorship at the Massachusetts College
of Art and Design following anonymous complaints after he screened his
work Notes After Long Silence (1989) to his
class — the film contains
images of Levine having sex with his partner.

Individually, Thomas's videos are more involved with
images of womanhood,
working class identity and celebrity culture, whilst Kudakwashe turns to Afrofuturism in a scrambling
of racial identity and hyper - masculinity.
Manna's moving
image work explores the ways in which power is articulated through relationships — from expressions
of masculinity in
working -
class East Jerusalem, to the particular bond between athlete and coach, or the diplomatic role that Norway played in the Oslo Peace Accords.
On show here are
works belonging to the Christian Democratic Appeal (a small clay figurine representing the importance
of family values and faith), the Labor Party (a piece
of a new kind
of asphalt, more endurable under extreme temperatures, connoting stability, employment and freedom
of movement for the
working class), the Socialist Party (photos
of a protest by harbor workers in Rotterdam that went on strike in 1979 to demand higher salaries), and Leefbar («Livable») Rotterdam (an
image of tolerant multiculturalism, at odds with the ideological identity
of the owners.)
Using appropriation more pointedly,
works from Martha Rosler's powerful Bringing the War Home: House Beautiful series (1967 - 72) juxtapose
images from lifestyle magazines with found Vietnam War photography to wrench a distant, all - too - real dystopia into the living rooms
of middle -
class Americans.
This exhibition
of newly commissioned and loaned
work by contemporary artists, whose use
of the
image of the boxer provided an opportunity to consider the role
of the male body as a focus for debates about race, eroticism,
class and masculinity.
After studying literature and art history at Yale University and later taking
classes at the Art Institute
of Chicago, Oldenburg moved to New York and eventually became part
of a group
of artists challenging Abstract Expressionism by returning to «realism,»
working with found objects and figurative
images.
The concept
of these shadow sculptures is applied in reverse to their light sculptures: constructions out
of computer sequenced light - bulbs that reference iconic pop culture by creating

class Americans.
Schimmel credited artists, many
of them already
working with text and
images, like Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw, Paul McCarthy and Ed Ruscha, for «embracing Ray because they saw he occupied a beautiful quasi place — not
of the L.A. art world but in tune with it — and because he was also more truly L.A. than almost anyone, I mean in terms
of beach culture, lower middle
class white culture.
Taken together, the reproduction
of images in these
works becomes a complex allegory for the reproduction
of the cultural status quo — in particular the perpetuation
of racial,
class, and gender hierarchies in American culture.
