Images taken with a telephoto - lens camera on NASA's Mars rover Curiosity catch the larger of Mars» two moons, Phobos, passing directly in front of the sun — the sharpest
images of a solar eclipse ever taken at Mars.
Totality (2016)-- a commission with Arts Council Collection and Somerset House — is a mirror ball comprising over 10,000
images of solar eclipses, nearly every one that has been documented by humankind either by illustration or photography.
Not exact matches
But by gathering
images from over 1,000 trained volunteers and from members
of the public snapping pics with smartphones across the country, the MegaMovie project will capture the full 90 - minute duration
of the
solar eclipse as it crosses the continental United States.
The goal
of the
eclipse mission, led by NASA and supported by Southern Research, was to gather visible - light and infrared
images of the
solar corona and collect extensive data on the temperature
of Mercury's surface.
The
images present a striking record
of historic
solar and lunar
eclipses, comets, and even views
of binary stars and distant constellations.
The
images depict what might be called embryology in flagrante: micrographs
of sperm cells, trailing accordion - like pleats
of white zags as they streak across a vast blue ocean
of ooplasm; a multihued blastocyst in the process
of hatching out
of the egg's zona pellucida; and egg cells with a fringe
of glowing, fate - determining proteins, looking a bit like a
solar eclipse inside a cell.

of structure extending well beyond the Sun, like the

Paterson is making a mirror ball that will have
images of nearly every
solar eclipse documented by humankind.
By that time, she had spent almost two decades collaging found
images to expose and manipulate the ideological structures that underpinned photography, crafting series such as «Modern History,» 1977 — 79, for which she excised the text from the front pages
of newspapers so that the size and position
of the remaining
images —
of statesmen or a
solar eclipse or a masked Sandinista guerrilla — laid bare a visual grammar
of power.
The exhibition features
images of close - ups
of the Moon and its Henry Frères craters from the 1890s, the first photographs
of the Sun from 1870 by Rutherfurd and from 1878 by Janssen, an
image of the
solar corona during a total
eclipse proving the curvature
of the light; catches
of comets and shooting stars and,
of course, the
images of nebulae and galaxies taken between 1910 and 1960 by the observatories
of Lick, Mont Wilson and Mont Palomar.
The book includes photographs,
image material, graphics and texts that Wolfgang Tillmans made or assembled on the phenomenon
of solar eclipses.
