images have never been very important in Christian
art?

by the formidable impediment to all visual

by the second commandment — a prohibition not only against graven
images but also against the production

art, whereas the Protestant theological system relies on the priority
of the word over the
image as the medium through which God communicates Himself to us, and

of which we apprehend Him.
A century ago, T. S. Eliot presented the
image of a self - organizing literary culture in «Tradition and the Individual Talent,» one in which «[t] he existing monuments form an ideal order among themselves, which is modified
by the introduction
of the new (the really new) work
of art among them,» which alters «the whole existing order... if ever so slightly.»
In so doing he perhaps had in mind the words
of the Catechism
of the Catholic Church, which reminds us that, «Created «in the
image of God», man also expresses the truth
of his relationship with God the Creator
by the beauty
of his artistic works» before further explaining that, «To the extent that it is inspired
by truth and love
of beings,
art bears a certain likeness to God's activity in what he has created.
Looking at
art works
of Asian Christian artists, I sometimes wonder whether some
of them have reproduced outward forms and
images of other religions at the expense
of the inner meanings symbolized
by these forms and
images.
