How realistic are
images of planets around other stars — and should they be?

Previous missions selected by New Frontiers include New Horizons, a nuclear - powered probe that flew by Pluto in 2015 and is now going deeper into the Kuiper Belt; OSIRIS - REx, a robot that's flying out to meet asteroid Bennu and bring a sample
of it back to Earth; and the Juno mission, which is looping
around Jupiter, recording unprecedented data and breathtaking
images of the
planet.

The spectacular discs that ALMA has
imaged around much younger stars, such as HL Tauri, contain much more material that is in the process
of forming
planets.
This artist's impression is based on a detailed map
of the surface compiled from
images taken from NASA's Dawn spacecraft in orbit
around the dwarf
planet Ceres.
Two rival teams
of astronomers are racing to capture unprecedented
images of giant
planets around other stars.
It's been a marathon performance: 20 years in space, more than 200 orbits
around Saturn, and hundreds
of thousands
of images of the giant
planet, its splashy rings and its many moons.
Last year the Herschel Space Observatory detected wisps
of water vapor
around the dwarf
planet, and since its arrival at Ceres, Dawn has
imaged oodles
of highly reflective bright spots on the Cereian surface that may be sites
of exposed water ice.
They hope these bigger projects might be able to directly
image Earth - like
planets around nearby stars in search
of signs
of life.
Eichstädt began working with JunoCam in 2013, when he processed some
images of Earth the instrument captured as it looped
around our
planet to pick up speed en route to Jupiter.
Images from the New Horizons spacecraft show hints
of what could be a few isolated clouds scattered
around the dwarf
planet, the first seen in otherwise clear skies.
Infrared
images from the Keck and Gemini telescopes reveal three giant
planets orbiting counterclockwise
around a young star, in a scaled - up version
of our solar system.

Although the increased size
of the E-ELT will be essential to obtaining an
image of a
planet at larger distances in the Milky Way, the light collecting power
of the VLT is just sufficient to
image a
planet around the nearest star, Alpha Centauri.
As a member
of the Science Team
of the MESSENGER mission to Mercury, Chapman has been studying
images and other data returned from the spacecraft's first flybys
of Mercury and from its primary and extended orbital missions
around the
planet; he is Education Public Outreach liaison with the Science Team and, as a member
of the Geology Discipline Group
of the Science Team, he is helping to conduct searches for satellites
of Mercury and putative vulcanoids, as well as concentrating on studies
of Mercury's craters and geological processes and history.
The second vortex study, led by Mawet, presents an
image of the innermost
of three rings
of dusty
planet - forming material
around the young star called HD 141569 A.
So, this
image shows the very early stage
of planet formation
around a baby star.
If we could successfully build an atmosphere
around Mars, and somehow refill the oceans, Gill's
images are a good idea
of how the
planet would look.
Over the next several weeks, Dawn will deliver increasingly better and better
images of the dwarf
planet, leading up to the spacecraft's capture into orbit
around Ceres on March 6.
The
images, which show the cratered and pockmarked surface
of the small icy world, were taken by the Cassini probe, which entered into orbit
around the
planet in 2004.
Cassini has been in continual orbit
around Saturn since 2004, capturing
images of the
planet in varying lighting conditions and from a wide range
of angles.

In order to extract the signal
of a
planet in an
image, there is a lot
of interference I have to take out: the random noise from the camera's own electronics, the scattered light
around the coronagraph, and the rotation
of the individual exposures.
The spacecraft has recently entered its last year
of operations, conducting more than 3,000 orbits
around the
planet, while transmitting more than 200,000
images back to Earth.
The European Space Agency's Mars Express probe continues to
image and study the surface
of the Red
Planet and gather data about the Martian atmosphere today, nearly 10 years after arriving in orbit
around Mars.
The ALMA
image shows that cosmic dust, which is component material
of planets, is circling
around the star in a form
of asymmetric ring.
Beta Pictoris,
of course, has a well known directly
imaged planet around it.

Kepler 10b was detected using the transit method from more than eight months
of data collected by the spacecraft between May 2009 and early January 2010 and confirmed by radial velocity measurements, and there evidence for another
planet (KOI 72.02) in an outer orbit with a period
around 45.3 days (Kepler news release;
images, animations, and discovery page; and Batalha et al, 2011).
She's one
of the early adopters
of Google Earth, a mapping program that pastes together satellite
images from
around the world to provide a complete, searchable — no, visitable — aerial view

After the surprisingly gross
images that came out in 2008 showing how much debris is floating
around our
planet, the problem
of our orbits acting as a giant dump has become a well - known issue.
That makes it harder for the display to create the richest black levels behind a
planet or starship in space without creating halos
of light
around them — those milky blotches you may notice behind bright
images on black backgrounds.
The icons and
images are by no means up there with the crisper and clearer smartphones screens on the
planet, and doesn't match up to many
of the smaller, cheaper handsets
around, like the Palm Pixi Plus, which maintains a smooth and crisp resolution.
