Not much is mentioned again about the technique until the 1960's when a Russian scientist, Igor Charcovsky, began experimenting with the use of warm water
immersion for women in
labor to see how it affected their
labor, the
birth,
and newborn behavior.
I will need to read the paper more closely to comment on the relationship between
immersion and duration of
labor; in a prior study I found that women who had longer
labors were more likely to be removed from the water
for medical reasons
and so would never be counted in the water
birth group.2
