This demographic shift, augmented by Jewish
immigrants from the former Soviet Union, has transformed much of the Jewish landscape of the city,
according to Michael Tobman, a political consultant who has helped advise campaigns and organizations in Brooklyn's Orthodox Jewish
neighborhoods.
The North Side
neighborhood that once housed mostly German and Italian
immigrants is now home to a new group of
immigrants where 20 percent of families speak a language other than English at home,
according to U.S. Census data.
