Now that Congress has replaced the disastrous test - driven No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law
with the promise
of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), state and district policy agendas can now more effectively mitigate
poverty's
impact.
This commentary is part
of a series produced for the Broader, Bolder Approach to Education by educators across the country who want to illustrate the
impact of poverty on their classrooms, schools and communities and propose education policies
with real promise to weaken the
poverty - education link.
So what are we to make
of this data where families in living in
poverty are choosing schools
with positive test scores
impacts and middle class families are choosing schools
with negative test score
impacts?
These sections
of the federal law place identifying and addressing childhood trauma and other variables linked to
poverty alongside policy options for recruiting and retaining effective teachers and school leaders, maximizing the
impact of early childhood education, using data to improve student achievement, and serving students
with disabilities.
Educator training should include a concerted focus on the
impact of poverty - linked variables and ACEs on learning, along
with effective strategies at the state, district, school, and classroom levels to mitigate ACEs
impact and support student success.
This inclusion parallels the recommendations
of the Equity and Excellence Commission's report, signaling that children's experiences
with poverty have taken their place alongside other significant variables
impacting student achievement in the federal education policy framework.
The study
of 600 teachers, conducted by Abacus Associates for the Connecticut Education Association, underscores mounting concerns by legislators, educators, parents, and others about the test's validity, fairness, and negative
impact on students — particularly those in high -
poverty districts and those
with limited access to computers.
The Capital Area Region and the Utica Area Region collected data that provided indicators
of success and
impact on student achievement using the Instructional Strategies from Engaging Students
with Poverty in Mind after offering distance learning workshop from the Teaching is the Core Grant.
While federal cuts to education would cause all districts to either reduce services or compensate for deficits
with state or local dollars, Trump's proposed budget would have the most severe
impact on districts
with high concentrations
of poverty and other challenges.
They include the implementation
of a new largely skills - based school curriculum in line
with what was recommended by Professor Graham Donaldson's review, retaining free breakfasts in primary schools and «lunch and fun clubs» during school holidays, continuing to prioritise tackling the
impact of poverty on education, strengthening school leadership, and creating over 100,000 new apprenticeships.
Our Teaching Academies predominantly serve students and families
of color, and are situated in communities that are both vibrant and struggling
with the
impacts of poverty and racism.
Through these conversations, it became clear that we and our students are struggling
with the violence,
poverty, and trauma
impacting many
of Chicago's communities.
Both sides
of the debate agree that
poverty can
impact a child's ability to learn, and test scores are highly correlated
with family income.
She said many people
with ideas on how to improve teaching know little about the realities
of classrooms, especially where the
impacts of factors such as
poverty, high numbers
of special - education students and unsupportive parents shape what is going on.
A federal mandate that Title I funding be allocated to eligible students, regardless

of students, including those
with disabilities, those who are learning English, those who are gifted, and those
impacted by
poverty.
Putting aside the reality that the actual number
of poor parents
with four or five children in the school system is extremely low, the stunningly ignorant and disturbing approach to «doing something» about the crippling
impact of poverty in Hartford is a stark reflection about how out -
of - touch many in the Corporate Education Reform Industry actually approach the real issues that are limiting educational achievement in Hartford and other poor communities across Connecticut and the nation.
District leaders are hopeful that fostering regular communication
with families will improve academic outcomes — especially for the nearly 80 percent
of Ontario SD students living in
poverty, for whom daily attendance can have the greatest
