Today, I read an article on resume writing that offered some great advice but differed on
the importance of a summary statement.

Melancthon always realised that Luther's rumbustious concern with the dynamic
of faith, with preaching the Gospel, with a lived and announced theology must arouse opposition, and gladly as he accepted Luther's sincerity and indeed the
importance of a Gospel enunciated without compromise, yet he considered it was necessary also to have a conceptual
summary of what was believed, which could enable the different viewpoints to come together in what we call today Agreed
Statements.
It may comprise: advice on complying with pre-action protocols; exploring the different avenues available for alternative dispute resolution (ADR); providing clients with a glossary
of terms they will be come across in the court process; instruction sheets in plain English to explain aspects
of procedure and the essential law to be applied (translated to be available in Welsh or foreign languages); how to provide disclosure; preparing court documents such as witness
statements, case and costs
summaries, chronologies and skeleton arguments; complying with the Rules in relation to service
of documents, the preparation
of statements of case, the appointment and instruction
of expert witnesses; the
importance of CPR Pt 36; or how to prepare for and what to expect at a financial dispute resolution (FDR) or a final hearing / trial.
In Wallbridge v. Brunning, the Court
of Appeal held that whether a law firm can be vicariously liable for defamatory
statements made by a lawyer who practices «in association» with it (as opposed to being an associate employed by the law firm or a partner
of the law firm), is an issue
of general
importance that should be determined at a trial and not on a motion for
summary judgment.
Wagner also stressed the
importance of a strong
summary statement at the very top
of the resume to introduce yourself and your career objectives.
