Making the rounds of
some important fall film festivals and then beginning its qualifying run in limited release four days before Christmas, Not Fade Away arrived with the unmistakable implication of awards prospects.
Not exact matches
All in all, though, we don't
fall in love with any of these characters, we don't root for the
film's one «couple» (who we think all along will unrealistically be granted a predictable Hollywood ending), we can't remember the jokes after the fact and, most
important, we aren't consistently entertained.
A serious
film about an
important subject seems like an
important film, even if the effort
falls far short of the target.
In addition to succeeding on the most
important measures of story and character, Coco also evokes marvel on a technical level, something even lesser Pixar
films can
fall back on.
The
film has its virtues — principally the acting and the look, which is occasionally gorgeous — but it
falls short in the most
important department, the script.
It would seem the
film fell victim to the twin vagaries of executive shifts at the studio and failing to gather enough momentum to nab that all -
important greenlight.
Of course many makers of
films noirs were authentically Germanic: Robert Siodmak (Phantom Lady, The Killers), Billy Wilder (Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd.), Otto Preminger (Laura,
Fallen Angel, Where the Sidewalk Ends), not to mention other directors and — just as
important — designers and cameramen.
While the
film may touch upon
important subjects such as body shaming, the jokes
fall flat.
1969 was an extraordinary year for filmmakers and filmmaking, at least as
important as the fabled thoughts and
felling about 1939 (also a great year), but this
film was subtly groundbreaking and with the rollback of rights, et al, seems as fresh as ever despite being set in the near past.
Fallen Angels Though
Fallen Angels certainly has a dialogue in both narrative and production with Chungking Express, it's
important to stress just how exaggerated, how forceful so much of this
film feels in comparison to even the glorious excesses of its predecessor.
As a reviewer, it feels
important to sum up what I feel a
film is saying, even when it appears to
fall flat on a number of fronts.
When I think back to, say, Boogie Nights (1997), the details of why its de facto family of porn stars disperses halfway through the
film seem less vivid and
important than the
falling - through - the - floor desperation that the characters — and audience — collectively experience in that devastating 1980s downfall montage.
Responsibility for helming the Wakandan king's first solo headline gig
fell to Ryan Coogler, but as the hype builds and pre-sale ticket records are smashed ahead of the
film's release, it's
important to consider the wider cultural impact of this landmark event in the history of black cinema.
