Spotlight review: While not the strongest of this year's awards contenders, Spotlight is one of the most
important films of all time.

What is
important about this
film is not that it serves as a history lesson (although it does) but that, at a
time when the threat
of nuclear holocaust hangs ominously in the air, it reminds us that we are, after all, human, and thus capable
of the most extraordinary and wonderful achievements, simply through the use
of our imagination, our will, and our sense
of right.
From his inspired collaborations with the prolific writer Charlie kaufman in Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, to his adapted screenplay
of Maurice Sendak's Where The Wild Things Are, Jonze continues to prove himself as not only an
important film - maker
of his
time but also a wonderful screenwriter, and his latest feature Her starring Joaquin Phoenix might just be his magnum opus.
Oscarology is not an exact science and quite why it has done so spectacularly well is still a bit
of a mystery to me, but the
time has come for those, like me, who have treated the
film with a touch
of friendly scepticism to wake up to an
important part
of what made it so compelling: its differentness, its originality.

important message that many
of us tend to stubbornly ignore in our day - to - day lives, making the
timing of Spielberg's latest

GET OUT An unbelievable achievement from a first
time director and a
film which has inspired discussion around an
important subject in the way that the best horror / suspense
films always do, utilising subversion and subtlety instead
of bombast and realism.
However, this is a children's
film and a lot
of the children in the theater couldn't stop laughing and were having a great
time, so that's what is really
important.
As with any Apatow - produced flick, the runtime is overlong and the amount
of improv often derails any momentum, but for the first
time in the run
of films produced by the man, that momentum is incredibly
important: in action cinema, tension and pace is required to make things exciting, but Pineapple Express forgets about that so its characters can sit around smoking weed and saying silly things another four or five

Cowperthwaite's
film brings up

film The Cove (2009)-- which dealt with the slaying
of dolphins, and had more participatory moments to add to the effect.
Another writer - director who was himself, like Fuller, at the forefront
of a particularly
important moment in the history
of American independent
film, John Sayles, used his
time introducing Park Row to eloquently characterize the
film, in one
of the overall best, most informed, beautifully delivered speaker presentations I've ever seen at TCMFF, as «Citizen Kane printed on butcher paper.»
I kept thinking
of that all the
time and that was the main idea that I took to Fabian, that I wanted to make a
film about when someone loses someone who is very
important to him and how to keep going.
Blackfish: This heartbreaking, essential documentary is difficult to watch at
times, yes, but it's also an
important film that works as both a piece

Co-writers and co-directors Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (first

time to chart its bizarre evolution from action
