With growing risks to the nation's electrical
grid from natural disasters and as a potential target for malicious attacks, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) should work closely with utility operators and other stakeholders to
improve cyber and physical security and resilience, says a new congressionally mandated report by the
National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
So we double the budget of key agencies, including the
National Science Foundation, a primary source of funding for academic research; and the
National Institute of Standards and Technology, which supports a wide range of pursuits from
improving health information technology to measuring carbon pollution, from — from testing «smart
grid» designs to developing advanced manufacturing processes.

improve accessibility, reliability and range of electricity services, (7) strengthening the sustainability of energy access efforts and maximizing benefits and (8) harnessing the cross-sector development impact of off -
grid renewables.
