Schema Therapy (ST) approaches to high - functioning autism spectrum disorder (HF - ASD)
in young people have yet to demonstrate differential effectiveness, and there is little evidence that young people
with HF - ASD adapt ST.
The third study
in this symposium elaborates on a previous study which showed that a brief form of group
schema therapy is feasible
in older adults
with recurrent mood disorders and maladaptive personality traits, but somewhat less effective compared to younger adults.
The focus group provided participants
with an opportunity to discuss their needs and experiences associated
with participating
in the
schema therapy group.
To my knowledge, this makes
Schema Therapy the only evidence - based treatment for forensic patients
with personality disorders that is recognized
in any country.
Basis of this workshop is the fact that difficult
therapy situations evolve, when the therapist, triggered by incidents within the therapeutic relationship, flips into a state of disintegration (maladaptive
schemas and modes) and automatically / unintentionally engages
in dysfunctional coping behaviour, which,
in turn, amplifies dysfunctional mechanisms
with the patient.
In comparison to cognitive - behavioral
therapy,
schema therapy emphasizes lifelong patterns, affective change techniques, and the therapeutic relationship,
with special emphasis on limited and adaptive re-parenting.
In the meantime, we have recently published a case study of our first, apparently successful treatment of a psychopathic patient
with Schema Therapy.

Schema Therapy to fight the Punitive Critic mode; Limited reparenting strategies to connect
with adolescent clients
with Borderline Personality features; Safety interventions for clients
with complex trauma.

The adapted group
schema therapy protocol is currently being investigated
in a multi-centre trial using a pre -, mid - and post-test design
in order to investigate the outcome of this adapted form of SCBT - g for a homogeneous group of older adults diagnosed
with mixed PDs.
