in the Shar - Pei is not hopeless.
Mast cell tumors tend to be particularly aggressive
in the Shar - Pei and can spread to lymph nodes and other organs.
The skin folds
in the Shar - Pei usually do not result in primary disease.
An important function of the immune system is in tumor surveillance and this function may be decreased
in Shar - Pei.
Thus HA has a very important structural function in the body and varies in consistency from a thicker tenacious fluid such as seen in joint fluid or in the skin of Shar - Pei (recall how «sticky» the fluid is in a skin laceration
in the Shar - Pei) to a solid - type material as is seen in joint cartilage.
Histiocytomas can occur at any age
in the Shar - Pei unlike in other breeds where they tend to be seen only in young animals.
This represents the number one problem area
in the Shar - Pei.
Rhinitis - Bacterial nasal infections occur
in Shar - Pei again probably related to the high incidence of IgA deficiency in the breed.
Sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) is a retinal disease seen
in Shar - Pei as well as other breeds of dogs.
You will not cure ear disease
in the Shar - Pei, but you can control it.
In the Shar - Pei the soft palate often is so long that it interferes with the opening to the trachea.
However,
in the Shar - Pei, it builds up in the spaces around kidney cells and eventually «chokes» them to death.
Hypothyroidism is a fairly common malady
in the Shar - Pei.
Demodectic mange - is probably the number one concern
in the Shar - Pei.
The primary problem with ear cleaning
in the Shar - Pei breed centers on inadequate training and lack of control of the dog.
Since these allergies can be quite severe
in the Shar - Pei resulting in intense itching, loss of hair, infected ears etc look for foods that contain healthy sources of fats such as fish oil.
In the Shar - Pei it is often secondary to lens luxation.
Hot spots or pyotraumatic dermatitis is fairly common
in Shar - Pei and is caused by self - trauma due to itching.
Clinicians in the AHTs Clinical Oncology Unit have encountered a number of young Shar Pei with unusually aggressive mast cell tumours, and previous reports in veterinary medical journals describe an increased incidence of mast cell tumours
in Shar Pei, with aggressive mast cell tumours more common
in Shar Pei under 2 years of age.
It is possible for a dog to have substantial kidney damage before the first fever episode even happens therefore it is important to begin therapy after the first episode and to regularly screen for urinary protein loss
in any Shar pei whether fevers have occurred or not.
Hyaluronan is a structural protein in everyone's skin but a mutation
in the Shar pei leads to multiple copies of the genes regulating production of hyaluronan.
Obviously, a fever can develop
in a Shar pei from a wound or other source of infection just as it can in any other breed of dog.
This condition is called entropion and is very common
in the Shar pei.
This type of demodectic mange treatment is the same as other forms of demodectic mange and has a higher incidence
in the Shar pei and Sheepdog.
Skin problems are very common
in Shar Peis, including allergies and skin and ear infections.
It is uncommon for entropion to recur after surgery unless the entropion is quite involved, particularly
in the Shar Pei breed.
This problem is usually inherited and we commonly see this condition
in the Shar - Pei, Chow Chow, Bulldog, Retriever, Rottweiler, and Setter breeds at a young age, though the condition can occur in aging dogs as well as cats and foals.
The loose skin is particularly abundant
in Shar Pei puppies and reduces as they grow.
Malignant: none effective, may need to consider euthanasia; systemic: poor response to chemotherapy; cutaneous: corticosteroids, relapse is common, especially
in Shar - Peis
