If you live
in the Sonos world, it's easy to recommend the Sonos Playbase or Playbar.
With the newer, more seamlessly designed, voice controlled Sonos One now available alongside the Play: 1 though, does the old Play: 1 speaker still have a place
in the Sonos portfolio and is it still worth considering for those looking to start or add to their Sonos system?
And now, the company has debuted its first Alexa - enabled speaker,
in the Sonos One.
While I'm personally a fan of the Sonos One's excellent sound, its Amazon Alexa integration is far too limited to actively recommend; the microphone array
in the Sonos One is also weaker than any smart speaker I've tried, often requiring multiple «Alexa» requests when music is playing.
The new smart speaker will replace the original Play: 1 but it will come in at the same # 199 price point, making it the cheapest and smartest speaker
in the Sonos line - up, though still more expensive than the Amazon Echo at # 89.99.
The capacitive buttons on the Sonos One match the style of those introduced to both the Play: 5 in September 2015 and the Playbase in February 2017, which ties the new smart speaker in with the latest products
in the Sonos portfolio.
Amazon's Alexa
in the Sonos One works with thousands of different smart home devices (here are some of our favorites).
Meanwhile, the company has also added Apple AirPlay support
in Sonos firmware v3.4, allowing an AirPort Express to be plugged into a Sonos device's aux - in input and stream from it around the home.

The overall balance is towards the bassier side, but we're totally fine with that - and if you're not then you can always adjust the equaliser levels
in the Sonos app to suit your preference.
Available in all white or all black, the Playbase doesn't exactly look like any other speaker
in the Sonos line — several of the others feature gray elements like speaker grills — but its streamlined aesthetic will fit in well with an existing system.
I should point out that this relationship apparently went both ways, because you now can create groups of Echo products and use what was a unique feature
in Sonos, party mode, to synchronize the sound all over your house, providing an experience identical to a far more expensive custom wired - in speaker system.
To use the feature, add Audible as a service
in the Sonos App or play it directly from the Audible App to Sonos.
What's more, once you have a Sonos One on your network, you can control all your other Sonos speakers with voice commands, too — and from any Alexa - compatible speaker (the Sonos One, however, is the only smart speaker
in the Sonos lineup).

And while it seems likely that you'll be able to play music from another service to HomePod through the newly announced AirPlay 2 system, that's still the weakest music support of any of the HomePod's competitors, all of which support direct playback of services like Spotify, Pandora, and,
in Sonos» case, just about every music service ever made.
