in the
group's literary journal, and collaborate
with schools and civic
groups in the area.
In 1996, I attended the Orange County Christian Writers Conference and joined a
critique group with some of the people I met there.

My experience
with critique groups has mostly been very positive, but even if my
group was populated
with the folks you've introduced
in this post, I'd still keep going.
I do still encourage the use of
critique groups and beta readers as a first step
in learning the
ins and outs of the craft and business of writing, but keep
in mind that most of what you hear
in a
critique group needs to be taken
with a grain of salt.
Peer review,
critique groups, freelance book doctors, etc., can all help if you're lucky enough to find the right people, but I don't think there's any substitute for what an
in - house editor
with a vested interest
in your project can bring to the table.
Anne: As you know, I had the great pleasure to be
in your mom's
critique group when she was writing ROXANNA and we were all impressed
with the writing and research that went into it.
Some writers prefer a combination approach, working
