There are quite a
few really charming
scenes,
in which the nice soundtrack and the images of her wandering around looking
at things create very intimate and unique moments, but one would have hoped for more of those.
Because the nerves have grown numb now, there are
scenes of cruel torture
in the picture — the kind that a troubled child would enact on his action figures after a
few days of standard play: Dr. Strange
at the mercy of glass needles, Nebula (Karen Gillan) bloodlessly segmented like a plasticine exhibit
in a sadist's medical museum... The atrocity escalates because there's nothing
at stake here.
Extras are, per Anderson's M.O., exasperatingly abstract: The cover copy refers to the bonus features as «special trailers,» but one is just a deleted
scene of Shasta and Doc watching the waves lap against the shore
at dusk (their lips are moving, but a dreamy Greenwood composition mutes everything they say), while the fourth and final, «Everything
in this Dream,» is an artful 6 - minute montage of cutting - room scraps, including a
few shots of Doc and Sauncho watching a schooner leave port that could be construed as the ending from Inherent Vice the novel.
Although Fatal Attraction does go overboard
