Using a unique capability of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (HST) astronomers announced today that they have detected the rare element boron
in an ancient star.
Both would have been born from massive stars that evolved in close proximity
in ancient star factories as a binary pair, eventually dying as supernovas.
Yet the telltale chemical signatures this should have left have not been observed
in the ancient stars» early descendants that roam our galaxy.
The experiment's result reinforces what scientists call the lithium problem, a discrepancy between the amounts of the element thought to have been produced 13.8 billion years ago and the amounts observed
in ancient stars.
