It is astonishing that some doctors have started to recommend putting
babies on their stomach to sleep, and some parents do it
in hopes of avoiding
flat head syndrome, but for a newborn
baby this is not safe at all.
And
in many cases, a
flat spot on a
baby's
head will round out on its own around 6 months of age, as she starts crawling and sitting up.
Start
in a semi-upright position then gradually lower yourself to be
in a
flatter position as your
baby gets stronger and starts lifting her
head.
To minimize the development of
flat spots on the back of
baby's
head, reduce the amount of time that your
babies spend lying
in car seats, carriers and bouncers while they're awake.
Tummy time is meant to help strengthen the muscles
in babies» necks and keep them from developing
flat spots on their
heads.
If the condition is mild, allowing your
baby to have more tummy time or carrying her
in a carrier to allow her to have a «break» from resting on the back of her
head, for example, may help to correct the
flat head.
Actions to take: Always place your
baby on their back to sleep Place your

head is uncovered (such as bedding and toys), blankets should be tucked no higher than shoulder height It is encouraged to let your

Time spent passively laying
in baby gear worsens muscle imbalances and increases the risks of Torticollis and
Flat Head Syndrome.
If you notice significant asymmetries or preferred positions that aren't getting better, if your
baby doesn't appear able to turn her
head in each direction or if your little one is developing a
flat spot, seek the help of a professional.
