calories and weight loss.
Jonathan Bailor, author of The
Calorie Myth, is fond of saying that if you make no other changes
in your diet, you will see positive results just from adding a few extra servings of green leafy vegetables a day.
According to one of the most commonly held diet
myths,
in order to lose one pound of fat per week, you need to create a 3,500 weekly
calorie deficit through diet and exercise.
It is the avocado high fat content that has led to the
myth that avocados are fattening and should be avoided
in low
calorie diets.
This was probably the single best study ever published that debunks the «I'm
in a
calorie deficit but I can't lose weight»
myth:

A study
in Applied Nutritional Investigation [7] aimed to dispel the
myth that this fruit was fattening by assessing their addition to
calorie - restricted diets.
The only way it works is to get over the diet mentality, the idea the «
calories -
in needs to be less than
calories - out for weight loss», and all of the other
myths we've been told
in the last few decades.

According to
calorie myths, even if an overweight individual did not eat any
calories, they would not be
in a state of caloric deficit as they are still surrounded (literally) by
calories.
The second way this
myth probably got perpetuated is because of something called the thermic effect of food, which basically refers to the fact that when you digest food, your body has to burn some
calories in order to do that.
Also at the bottom of this post I have embedded a video presentation by Jonathan Bailor titled «The

Calorie Counting is Crazy» — the video is about an hour and twenty minutes but it is well worth the investment
in time and I guarantee you will think differently after watching it.
At best, this is wrongly continuing the
myth of
calories in and
calories out contributing to loss of fat.
