For his 2010 residency at 18th Street, his objective was to begin a series of paintings that re-defined the notion of
landscape in contemporary painting titled Spirit of Place.
Gottlieb, for instance, tells Goodnough that painting is «not only a matter of colors and shapes on canvas, but images made visible and integrated» (p. 58) while Baziotes gives a contradictory statement, remarking that «reference to existing objects is not particularly
helpful in contemporary painting.»
