We are a collective of audiovisual producers formed during a student strike
in defense of public education, free and quality in the highest seat of learning in Latin America: the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de México (UNAM).
Those of us on the SEE RESPECT ticket in the election know that our union needs to become more powerful
in its defense of public education.
And my supreme delight is derived from seeing the critics realize what I have known since all the essays were first submitted to me by the many parent, student, teacher, and administrator contributors to the book: There is a new leadership emerging across the country, with stirring stories of personal courage,
in defense of public education.
Ten members of APPS attended this meeting; nine of them spoke
in defense of public education.
There will be lots of important allies
in the defense of public education — superintendents, principals, public school parents and students, civil rights groups — but only the teachers unions have the political muscle to defend the institution of public education that is so vital for our democracy.
