Methanol production is also experiencing a
global resurgence, particularly
in China where the finished product — typically extracted from solid waste / biomass, but also from natural gas and
coal feedstocks — is widely
used in chemical production and industrial processes, as well as
in blended vehicle fuel.
Previous research has suggested a connection between
coal - burning and the Sahel drought, but this was the first study that
used decades of historical observations to find that this drought was part of a
global shift
in tropical rainfall, and then
used multiple climate models to determine why.
Instead of piping

use the greenhouse gas captured at a
coal - fired power plant just completed nearly 100 miles north of here and send it down into the reservoir, pushing oil out and leaving the greenhouse gas deep below, safely locked away from the atmosphere, so it does not add to
global warming.
The International Energy Agency estimated last year that both the decline
in China's
coal use and falling electricity demand reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 percent
in 2014, leading to a 0.2 percent reduction
in global emissions.
According to Princeton University scientists Stephen Pacala and Robert Socolow's «wedge» strategy of climate change mitigation — which quantifies as a wedge on a time series graph various sets of efforts to maintain flat
global carbon emissions between now and 2055 — at least two million megawatts of new renewable energy will have to be built
in the next 40 years, effectively replacing completely all existing
coal - fired power plants as well as accounting for increases
in energy
use between now and mid-century.
«
Using coal to make natural gas may be good for China's energy security, but it's an environmental disaster
in the making,» said Robert B. Jackson, Nicholas Professor of Environmental Sciences and director of the Duke Center on
Global Change.
The industry has faltered because of declining
global demand and low natural gas prices, which have encouraged electric power companies to
use gas instead of
coal to generate electricity, said Ray Rasker, executive director of Headwaters Economics, an independent research group focusing on the economic implications of land management decisions
in the West.

However, I've never seen a single media article
in any U.S. press outlet that covered these issues — the large - scale evidence for
global warming (melting glaciers, warming poles, shrinking sea ice, ocean temperatures) to the local scale (more intense hurricanes, more intense precipitation, more frequent droughts and heat waves) while also discussing the real causes (fossil fuels and deforestation) and the real solutions (replacement of fossil fuels with renewables, limiting deforestation, and halting the
use of fossil fuels, especially
coal and oil.)
Another focal point that seems missing is an analysis of how such domestic actions might affect
global trends
in such emissions — questions related to leakage, offsets, the trends
in coal production and
use in China, India, Indonesia etc..
David Victor, the University of California, San Diego, political science professor and author of «
Global Warming Gridlock,» noted some subtler aspects of the announcement that point to ever more efficient
coal use in China, but also unrelenting growth
in coal use — and carbon dioxide emissions.
People who are trying to
use the term «clean

in today's public context amidst concerns and dialogues related to
global warming, seem to be trying to mislead the public.
[4] While a range of positions is possible, it seems particularly strange that ExxonMobil takes the position that it does
in that future
global warming will be caused most by emissions from
use of
coal rather than by emissions from
use of petroleum or natural gas.
If the trend continues, the dramatic changes
in energy
use in the United States —
in particular, the switch from
coal to newly abundant natural gas for generating electricity — will have only a modest impact on
global warming, observers warn.
Much of
global coal production is
used in the country
in which it was produced; only around 15 % of hard

Decarbonizing the world's electricity supply,... would deliver a little less than half the reduction
in carbon dioxide emissions necessary by 2035 to limit the eventual increase
in global temperatures to two degrees Celsius,... The carbon intensity of electricity has increased by 6 % since 1990, largely due to growing
use of
coal for power generation
in emerging economies, it said.
Higher density sources of fuel such as
coal and natural gas utilized
in centrally - produced power stations actually improve the environmental footprint of the poorest nations while at the same time lifting people from the scourge of poverty... Developing countries
in Asia already burn more than twice the
coal that North America does, and that discrepancy will continue to expand... So, downward adjustments to North American
coal use will have virtually no effect on
global CO2 emissions (or the climate), no matter how sensitive one thinks the climate system might be to the extra CO2 we are putting back into the atmosphere.
We've had a few specific actionable proposals, like the Hansen et al. suggestion to shut down (and replace) all US
coal - fired plants by 2030; a calculation shows that, even
using IPCC's arguably exaggerated mean climate sensitivity of 3.2 C, this proposal would theoretically reduce
global warming
in 2100 by an imperceptible 0.08 C.

Evidence also exists of associations with low birth weight, increased infant and perinatal mortality, pulmonary tuberculosis, nasopharyngeal and laryngeal cancer, cataract, and, specifically
in respect of the
use of
coal, with lung cancer... Exposure to indoor air pollution may be responsible for nearly 2 million excess deaths
in developing countries and for some 4 % of the
global burden of disease.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I - VT) spoke this morning at the release of a Greenpeace Energy [R] evolution report that lays out,
using quite conservative estimates, how «the United States can meet the energy needs of a growing economy and achieve science - based cuts
in global warming pollution — without nuclear power or
coal.»
They determined that surpassing the 2 °C
global goal could be quantified as equivalent to the release of more than 1 trillion tonnes of carbon (3.7 trillion tonnes CO2), with their timeframe being 1750 (i.e. the start of the modern
use of
coal) to some distant point
in the future,
in their case 2500.
However, claims based on «eyeballing» and similar offered here

The study notes that current
global reserves of
coal, oil and gas equate to the release of nearly 3 trillion tonnes of CO2 when
used and based on this draws the conclusion that two thirds of this can not be consumed if a
global budget were
in place that limits emissions to 1.1 trillion tonnes of CO2 for the period 2011 to 2050.

Climate Depot Analysis: «There have been at least seven separate explanations for the standstill
in global warming» — 1) Low Solar Activity; 2) Oceans Ate Warming; 3) Chinese
Coal Use; 4) Montreal Protocol; 5) Readjusted past temps to claim «pause» never existed 6) Volcanoes 7) Decline

«No discussion of US energy security and reducing
global CO2 emissions is complete without talking about
coal — and the technologies that will allow us to
use this resource more efficiently and with fewer greenhouse gas emissions,» Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz said
in remarks released by the agency during his July visit to the National Energy Technology Laboratory
in Morgantown, W.Va.
... There's groundwork
in 17 states and within Federal agencies which will
use unsound assumptions about
global warming potential to penalize
coal - fired electricity.
Global demand for wooden pellets,
used to replace
coal in the generation of electricity, has risen considerably
in recent years as governments seek ways
in which to cut carbon emissions and reduce fossil fuel reliance.
