Over the next many years, I tried to learn everything I could about breast
feeding, and specifically about how to be sure that the babies
in the NICU were given
human milk.
1) Can I mix half formula and half
human breast
milk in feedings?
This is due to the high levels of lactose and vitamin C
in human milk, which aid
in the absorption of iron, and 3) breastfed babies do not lose iron through their bowels as do formula -
fed infants, whose intestines develop fissures from damage caused by cow's
milk.
Moreover, the prematurity of the infant gut meant it had to be
fed frequently with
human milk which was low
in fat and protein.
After all, they biologically expect to breastfeed and the fat content of our
human milk is much lower than
in other mammals, meaning our babies need to
feed frequently to simply stay alive and grow.
As it turns out,
human milk feeds both the baby AND the good bacteria
in baby's gut microbiome.
While moms feel pressured to
feed their infants
human breast
milk, two - thirds of mothers are unable to produce enough
milk or breastfeed as long as they wanted, according to a 2012 survey published

Previous studies of the effect of breastfeeding on morbidity among full - term infants have not always accounted for selection bias that may result if infants who are breastfed are inherently healthier than bottle -
fed infants.22
In the current study, the VLBW infants» ability to breastfeed did not reflect better health status as both
human milk and infant formula were provided via gavage
feeding especially during early enteral
feedings.
A reduction
in the incidence rates of sepsis among
human milk -
fed infants admitted to an intensive care nursery has also been recently reported.20 The study sample included 178 infants ranging
in gestational age from 25 to 40 weeks.
More recently, Lucas and Cole, 19
in a large, prospective, controlled study reported a lower incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis among VLBW infants
fed human milk compared with formula -
fed infants.
The only infant variable that differed significantly between the two groups was mean birth weight, which was higher by 73 g
in the
human milk -
fed group (Table 1).
