in Iceland: whalewatching from Reykjavík or Húsavík; exploring the volcanic landscapes of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula; discovering the puffin - speckled Westmann Islands; striking out across the vast Vatnajökull
icecap; and sailing around the isolated, silent Westfjords, home to seals, seabirds and Arctic foxes.

in.
I asked a related question here: http://www.blogger.com/profile/07521410755553979665 ``... would higher and lower CO2 measurements
in a forest, compared to a polar
icecap, suggest an actual flow of CO2 going on, out of or into the soil
in which the trees are growing?»
That'd be a hint that warm water could indeed get
in under the
icecap once the edges melt off, unblocking the deep channels and allowing water to circulate
in and out from the southern ocean — wouldn't it?
this doesn't
in itself discredit the AGW model, but it certainly should put a damper on the most recent gyre of hysteria vis - a-vis the recently rapidly melting arctic

I would be suprised if the increased flow of cold water from the melting polar
icecaps could decrease the total heat content of the oceans, given the amount of additional heat that must be
in the oceans that is causing the coral bleaching episodes throughout the tropics.

I agree that the application of higher resolution model equipment does not help to reduce the uncertainty range of the sea level
in the Amsterdam harbours: assumptions about changes
in the heat storage,
icecap melting and changes
in the gravity field dominate this uncertainty range (although some regiona features related to oceanic circulation and heat redistribution may be better resolved
in higher resolution models).
This conclusion has subsequently been supported by an array of evidence that includes both additional large - scale surface temperature reconstructions and pronounced changes
in a variety of local proxy indicators, such as melting on
icecaps and the retreat of glaciers around the world, which
in many cases appear to be unprecedented during at least the last 2000 years.

Then you show a bunch of pictures of glaciers melting, although the reader can not tell from looking that the glacier is melting because too many of us are driving SUVs or because solar activity
in the last part of the 19th century heated up the earth by a degree or two, and the
icecaps are still melting as a result.

Translating the above to climate science, if you tell me that
in 100 years earth inhabited by your children is going to hell
in a handbasket, because our most complicated models built with all those horrendously complicated equestions you can find
in math, show that the global temperatures will be 10 deg higher and
icecaps will melt, sea will invade land, plant / animal ecosystem will get whacked out of order causing food supply to be badly disrupted, then I, without much climate science expertise, can easily ask you the following questions and scrutinize the results: a) where can I see that your model's futuristic predictions about global temp,
icecaps, eco system changes
in the past have come true, even for much shorter periods of time, like say 20 years, before I take this for granted and make radical changes
in my life?

icecap.
The rationing system would have to be accompanied by a large, subsidized system to encourage improvements
in home appliance efficiency and insulation,
in public transportation, and
in special subsidies during extreme weather conditions (to buy more «
icecaps», not to exceed their ration).
