Indigo dyed fabrics
in home decor are quite popular these days and can be seen
in catalogues of the trendier home decor companies.
We run craft based workshops at our lovely shop
in Caldbeck Cumbria, ranging from felt - making, batik,
indigo dyeing, wire jewellery and more.
Some simple stitching later, digging into that stash of
indigo dyed fabric, and a good audiobook (What She Ate is currently
in my ears), and voila!

And it's
in South America that researchers recently found the oldest known example of fabrics
dyed with
indigo.
Indigo appears to be licensed for use as a food
dye in the U.S., but most [food
dyes] are synthetic and of broadly similar chemical constitution to those used as textile
dyes.
If you speak to experts
in the dying industry, they will tell you
indigo is not colorfast: It washes out, fades rather rapidly — more rapidly than a designed synthetic
dye.
Even if anything even vaguely related to GMOs makes you squeamish, you'll be happy to know that if these processes could be commercially scaled and made affordable enough to compete with synthetic
dyes, it could put a dent
in the 40,000 tons of synthetic
indigo used annually by the denim industry.
If all goes well, researchers envision giant vats of this specially engineered bacteria floating
in cheap and abundant glucose, producing
indigo for our bluejeans and shibori -
dyed linens.
Blue jeans used to get their blue from
indigo, a flowering plant (and you can still find high - end,
indigo -
dyed selvedge denim), but that natural process is pricy, and now 90 percent of denim produced
in China uses cheap, synthetic
dyes made from coal tar, sulfur, and other toxic chemicals.
I have always loved blue and one of the things that I love most about it is the ease of mixing
in various shades from navy -LCB- thinking chinoiserie, blue ticking,
indigo dyes -RCB- right alongside aquamarine tones of a coastal sea.
In my experience, the regular dark
indigo denim tends to 1) be more restrictive / stiff, 2) have
dye that easily transfers / rubs off on things, and 3) have a
dye that fades quickly.
