I live in a rural area, have been in a few local art guild shows.
Whether it be the local art fair or ArtExpo New York, that's how you get your work seen, that's how you put your hand in someone else's hand and say, «let me show you my work.»
I have just started writing about my work after reading this and also setting up a mutual show and tell art group in my local town.
Parallel to all of this exciting and unbelievable success, I also have an opportunity to show — to kind of create my own show in a local arts centre.
But this article has made me realize that I need to get out of the 2 gallery co-ops I'm in that have done nothing for me, to stop showing my work in the local art league shows that always make me depressed when I go to see them, and to quit buying booth space at holiday vendor shows next to Mary Kay because it might give me some exposure.
It's hard to imagine a professional art curator, with scholastic or historical intentions, ever being able to acquire the in - depth and intimate understanding of specific materials, visual sources or local scenes needed to produce shows like these, which is why artist - curated shows serve a vital purpose to even the most casual art viewer.

Born in Pennsylvania in 1958, the young Keith Haring was influenced by Dr. Seuss and Walt Disney and by the age of 20 had the honor of his first solo show at his local art center.
He has shown at both local galleries, including the Mass Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MOCA) as well as hung in shows in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
