more asinine Amazon
reviews, you will see that people have complained that the
book, published by Thomas Nelson, employs «too many big words» and that «literary fluff» clouds any clear, straightforward presentation of Christian theology.
Louis Lapham of Harper's recently estimated that publications making any kind of intellectual demand» e.g., Harper's, Atlantic, The New Republic, the New York
Review of
Books, Commentary, First Things» are all fishing
in a potential subscription pool of perhaps no
more than a million people.
If / when an author
in the group becomes published, he / she promises to help other members
in the group also get published, and
in return, they promise to write about and
review the author's
book so they can sell
more copies.
It is this close unity of the Mediterranean ecology, which was
in mind when Boissevain pointed out
in his
review of the
book, The People of the Mediterranean, that it is
more than just a place of meeting, trading and war.
Others may feel like the schoolgirl who was assigned to write a
review of a
book on penguins, and did it
in one sentence: «This
book tells me
more about penguins than I really wanted to know.»
Readers of the New York
Review of
Books learned that much
in June 1997, when they read a lengthy, two - part tirade
in which Gould attempted to settle scores with some of his
more prominent enemies within the guild of Darwinists.
At this stage I was «Barthian,» I suppose, although
in my anger at what I saw as illegitimate linkages between Christianity and literature, «graduate student cockiness» might be a
more accurate appellation (the
review of the
book in The Christian Century was titled «Charming Audacity»).
So this past year, I was much
more selective
in which
books I accepted for
review.
Not only are graduate theological schools producing
more theses and dissertations on Wesleyan subjects, but Methodist periodicals (Quarterly
Review, Methodist History, Proceedings of the Wesley Historical Society) are increasingly printing their articles, and new publishing enterprises are emerging to take up their longer monographic works (among these are Zondervan's Francis Asbury Press imprint, Abingdon's Kingswood
Books imprint, and Asbury Theological Seminary's new series
in Pietist and Wesleyan Studies) These scholars are quite likely to be found
in the Wesley Studies Working Group of the American Academy of Religion.
As Michael S. Rose put it
in the generallyantiliberal New Oxford
Review, Vows of Silence should be one of the most important
books in more than a decade for conservative Catholics
in the U.S. and beyond.
Although Meghan Duke has already posted accurate praise for Bruce D. Marshall's
review,
in the current FT, of Gary Anderson's
book Sin: A History, I want to say a bit
more about the
review from my own standpoint as a theology buff.
Matter and Mind is
reviewed in our
Book Reviews pages by Fr James Tolhurst who comments that it «has an immediacy and a conciseness to differentiate it from the final,
more elaborate version twenty years later.»
I saw
in Mohler's
review of the
book yet another illustration of what I have described here; for as Mohler related the
book's argument, there was precious little appeal to evidence, and considerably
more to morality and emotion.
But then one
more train of thought: Just as I was swamped
in the raging Galilee and the issues it raises, I ran across Scott Stossel's
review of Stumbling on Happiness, a
book by Daniel Gilbert, a Harvard professor of psychology who studies happiness (New York Times, May 7).
... wow, lot's of mis - statements here by people speculating about the Bible and Jesus, including those of you who think the
books of the Bible were written a few hundred years ago (Moses penned it around 1400BC)... the Bible is a collection of the most investigated writings of all time, so there is a tremendous amount of credible archeological and scientific material
in this world available for
review rooted
in verifiable investigations... my response, read the Bible, do your own investigation, determine the Truth for yourself... hopefully, anne rice's denouncement of faith
in the God of the Bible (it's difficult for me to believe she ever had Saving Faith
in the first place) will bring some readers to investigate and find the Truth... God will call the Elect, not one
more, not one less...
In view of that expectation, I have been even
more struck by the fact that Hartshorne has published four of his 19
books and a hundred articles and
reviews after his eightieth birthday.
There is such a wealth of information
in this
book, that even though I set out to write this
review three hours ago, I keep getting distracted by the
book and have to stop and pour through it some
more.
Interestingly, I noted from a previous
review of the milk chocolate Cornish sea salt and lime that the cocoa content has gone up from 30 % to 37 %, which
in my
book makes it even
more delicious.
