This has not always come out as clearly as it should have done
in English
translations of the
Old Testament, since there is no real equivalent
in English for the key word used for it
in the Hebrew.
The Septuagint, the Greek

William Tyndale (c. 1494 - 1536), a priest who had been

Old Testament which were of substantial assistance to later translators.

Old Testament Hebrew would know that the word translated «and»
in this pa.s.sage does not indicate another animal but is used
in the sense of «even» (which is used
in many
translations) for emphasis.
Across England and Scotland were secret groups of Lollards, a network of people who for a century now had nurtured among themselves a tradition of reading
translations of the text of the Bible
in manuscript excerpts from various popular sections of the
Old and New Testaments, and occasionally from the complete edition of Wycliffe's (or Purvey's) fourteenth - century
translation, rare though it was, the only English
translation in existence.
Nowhere surpassed
in the
Old Testament are, Elijah himself; Ahab,
in briefer scenes but especially
in chapter 21; even Jezebel, especially
in the line omitted
in the Hebrew manuscripts but authentically preserved
in the Greek
translation, the Septuagint, at 19:1 — «If you are Elijah, I am Jezebel!»
