The resolution noted that the Assemblies were formed on «several biblical Pentecostal distinctives, not the least of which is the belief that the initial physical evidence of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is speaking
in other tongues.»
Luke took such care in explaining the manner and content of the speaking «
in other tongues» that it is hard to resist the conclusion that he was fending off a Corinthian - like version of that experience.
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The purpose of speaking
in other tongues was not for the personal edification of the Christians but simply as means of converting unbelievers This gift, therefore, was altogether utilitarian.
