I saw someone asking about substitution in the recipe so I have to ask, You say water will not work and I can understand that easily, but could you use egg
whites in place of the buttermilk or would they burn in the oven?

vinegar in place of buttermilk.
I made these using the chocolate wafers for the centers and had to use buttermilk powder
in place of the buttermilk / yogurt / sour cream.
ps I'm figuring on a soy based yogurt / sour cream in my health food store (
in place of buttermilk), not sure if it exists, but will try...;)
At that point, some people use
it in place of buttermilk, while others add a little bit of yogurt and let the mixture sit out on the counter for 24 hours to make kefir.
Excellent recipe, I use whatever I have
in place of buttermilk, be it milk and lemon or sour cream, natural yoghurt, hazelnut yoghurt etc..
I did use 3/4 cup fat free half and half and 2/4 cup skim milk
in place of the buttermilk (because I never have buttermilk) and they were devine!
I used skimmed milk with 2 tbs white wine vinegar
in place of buttermilk.
