July 18, 2017 - Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) physicist Andrew MacKinnon has been awarded the John Dawson Award for
Excellence in Plasma Physics Research by the American Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics.
PPPL supports graduate education primarily through the Program
in Plasma Physics in the Department of Astrophysical Sciences of Princeton University.
And for his
work in plasma physics during his 22 - year stint at LLNL and previous research at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, Russia, Ryutov has garnered the American Physical Society's James Clerk Maxwell Prize for Plasma Physics.
The award, for which Squire was nominated by the Princeton Program
in Plasma Physics at PPPL, recognizes outstanding performance and professional promise and provides tuition and a stipend to fellowship winners.
Among the intriguing
issues in plasma physics are those surrounding X-ray pulsars — collapsed stars that orbit around a cosmic companion and beam light at regular intervals, like lighthouses in the sky.
These research results provide fundamental knowledge regarding the complete clarification of the «ion mass effect» which was an unsolved issue for many
years in plasma physics and fusion research.
As science equipment, Angara is
useful in plasma physics experiments and, ultimately, could help determine the conditions necessary for nuclear fusion; as a military tool, its powerful pulse of electrical energy can be converted into X-rays, providing scientists with a more convenient source of the radiation for testing weapons systems against the effects of nuclear blasts than that generated traditionally by a real nuclear explosion underground.
The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory invites you to participate in the Minority Serving Institution (MSI)
Workshop in Plasma Physics!
In 2003, she earned a
Ph.D. in plasma physics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, with a focus on fusion, which she continued to investigate as a faculty member at the University of New Hampshire and, later, Princeton.
This year Stratton hopes to bring in speakers who aren't necessarily
involved in plasma physics, perhaps scientists who research dark matter or cosmology.
«There are a lot of elements in this exhibit related to daily life at PPPL, including symmetry, turbulence, chaos, pattern formation, and oscillatory behavior, among others,» said Duarte, a fourth - year graduate
student in plasma physics.
To overcome this difficulty, researchers have been actively developing a new generation of numerical algorithms that preserve the geometric structures, such as the symplectic structure, of theoretical
models in plasma physics.
Topics in the sessions ranged from waves in plasma to the physics of ITER, the international physics experiment in Cadarache, France; to
women in plasma physics.
about PPPL researchers combine quantum mechanics and Einstein's theory of special relativity to clear up puzzles in plasma physics
The latest
advances in plasma physics were the focus of more than 1,000 scientists from around the world who gathered in Providence, R.I., from Oct. 29 through Nov. 2 for the 54th Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society's Division of Plasma Physics (APS - DPP).
The program kicked - off on June 9th with the week - long Introductory
Course in Plasma Physics, an intensive lecture series for students before they begin their research.
Verdon is a fellow of the American Physical Society and was awarded the Excellence
in Plasma Physics Research Award from the American Physical Society.
Myers is the seventh
Program in Plasma Physics graduate to win a top dissertation award and the first to receive the AAS - LAD prize.
Chauveau, who does research
in plasma physics in the mechanical engineering department at Stanford, found, however, that the program had an additional advantage.
It's not ignition, but we're getting an alpha - dominated plasma now, and from a scientific point of view for someone who
works in plasma physics, that's really exciting.
Some students come into the high school internship program at PPPL already harboring an
interest in plasma physics, knowing exactly what research they want to work on and what they want to learn.
Given that his PhD from UBC was
in plasma physics, nuclear fusion — potentially a solution to mankind's damaging dependence on fossil fuels — was a natural choice.
Shi developed the paper with assistance from co-authors Nat Fisch, director of the Program
in Plasma Physics and professor and associate chair of astrophysical sciences at Princeton University, and Hong Qin, a physicist at PPPL and executive dean of the School of Nuclear Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China.
«Quantum theory can describe certain details of the propagation of waves in plasma,» said Yuan Shi, a graduate student in the Princeton Program
in Plasma Physics and lead author of a paper published July 29 in the journal Physical Review A. Understanding the interactions behind the propagation can then reveal the composition of the plasma.
«The interesting thing about our ideas on mass separation is that it is a form of magnetic confinement, so it fits well within the Laboratory's culture,» said physicist Nat Fisch, co-author of the paper and director of the Princeton University Program
in Plasma Physics.
In addition, through the interdepartmental Program in Plasma Science and Technology, PPPL supports students in affiliated engineering and science departments, who pursue research
in plasma physics, while satisfying requirements and receiving degrees in their home departments.
Grierson received the Kaul Foundation Prize for Excellence
in Plasma Physics Research and Technology Development for his groundbreaking measurements of the flow of the main atomic nuclei, or ions, in the DIII - D tokamak.
