The title Pure Pretty Fever lends itself to the sweet pastel colors and his optimistic visions of utopian oasis and wild desert homesteads as well as the ecstatic nature of a vision's production, like hallucinations in a fever dream.

He noted in 1959 «Not only was Franny's work for Vogue classic, it was pure, the kind of photographic vision that bordered on improvisational theatre, catching the model's face at a sensitive moment rather than following an artificial grammar inherited from European fashion photographers who were the stars of the moment.

By doggedly ploughing his own furrow, Hartung in a sense refused to choose between two simplistic visions of abstract art: on one side, eruptive and chaotic painting, based on pure intuition, combined with the expressionist, gestural, lyrical, informal and Tachiste tendencies of post-war painting; and, on the other, control, precision and systems, whose notions belong more to the realm of Geometric Abstraction.

While Artists» House Gallery continues in the tradition of classical representational art it has also opened its doors to new visions and expressions to embrace non-objective works that explore pure color and line.»

From Forrest Bess» head size, interior vision, in its rough hewn frame to Rackstraw Downes» vast unframed view, unfettered by assumption or nostalgia; or from the glass and steel sculptures of Christopher Wilmarth to the stone and pure pigment paintings of Bianchi, the experience of viewing goes beyond the sum of the materials or methods employed.

The works are not so abstract as to be unrecognizable, but rather become vision of heaven on earth, manifesting the very essence of the world in its purest form
