Developed and pilot tested by researchers at Mills College, the
fractions resource kit provides support for teachers
in ways that is similar to those available to Japanese teachers for conceptualizing and
teaching fractions, and teachers use the lesson study process to learn about the subject matter and effective instructional practice.
In each of these grade - banded resource books, teachers are given activities to
teach sorting, counting, learning properties of geometric figures,
fractions, measurement, perimeter, area, and more.
As many students struggle to learn
fractions, which usually are
taught in third or fourth grade, the government is actually funding research into how to help kids learn
fractions.
Later,
in math class, the same students had less difficulty following Bridget McElduff as she
taught a lesson on adding
fractions with different denominators.
While a small
fraction of the
teaching force has had training
in some elements through pilot programs
in place for several years, the final system demands execution on a far larger scale.
By
teaching for transfer, students compared and contrasted elements
in both music and
fractions focusing on the following elements: time signature, note value, and number lines.
Looking for help on how to
teach fractions in this new system?
Instead, they've cleared out space
in the standards for
fractions to be
taught at length and
in depth.
