They can't have all been there the same year, but my memory puts together on the table
sweet potatoes and yams, butternut squash and the
white potatoes mashed with milk and butter that —
in one of those family traditions by which chores get divvied up — we were told only Uncle Hugo could make well.
I made these with oat flour instead of buckwheat, coconut nectar instead of maple syrup and
white sweet potatoes instead of orange ones (only ones available where I was
in South Africa) and they turned out DELICIOUS.
Yams are different than what we call «
sweet potatoes» and what are occasionally referred to as «yams» here
in the States — those bulbous often orange or
white root veggies are not actually even related to real yams.
Try to reduce the consumption of refined carbohydrates as they cause inflammation
in the skin — instead of
white bread, go for gluten - free whole grain bread or choose lower G.I. carbs like
sweet potato, or load up on vegetables like broccoli and asparagus and eat a smaller portion of carbs if forgoing carbs is too unpleasant.
My multiple experiments
in the kitchen to include as much
sweet potato as possible has led to one of my staple year - round dinners — the kale &
white bean stuffed
sweet potato.
However,
in the United States, there are two main varieties of
sweet potato: One has a golden skin with creamy
white flesh and a crumbly texture.
Sweet potato —
white and orange
sweet potatoes skin on chopped and tossed
in olive oil, sea salt, fresh garlic and cilantro.
I can change out ingredients to give it a different spin each time,
sweet potatoes instead of
white, black beans instead of pintos, collard greens or kale to give it a nutritional boost... But I'm fortunate to live
in a place where there is a lot of diverse cuisine available
in either dining out or ethnic market formats, so I don't have to choose just one:)
These buckwheat
sweet potato burgers are not the big fat, smelly, greasy burgers covered
in cheese, bacon, fried onions all cozied up between two slices of spongy
white bread.
If I absolutely had to, I'd probably go with
white potatoes, BUT that's mostly because
sweet potatoes weren't a thing
in my family when I was growing up, and I seriously had no idea that people made them into casseroles until I started reading blogs.

Beautiful to behold, this creative recipe is also full of protein and good - for - you ingredients like whole - wheat pastry flour,
sweet potatoes, olive oil, garlic, kale, and just a bit of
white wine (which is rich
in antioxidants).
~ using half veggie noodles and half pasta for a spaghetti and meatball dish ~ substituting plain Greek yogurt for mayonnaise
in tuna or chicken salad sandwiches ~ baking rather than frying crab wontons ~ puréeing

I do love
white sweet potatoes; I'm not sure if the ones you can find are the same we have
in the States — but there is something about the beautiful orange flesh that makes it not quite the same!
The recipe would be a winner as - is, but I did make a few changes, first off, using just
sweet potatoes in the crust vs.
white potatoes as well.
Other odds and ends — all
in very small amounts of 2 to 4 tablespoons —
in addition to the refried beans, Mexican rice, eggplant, tortillas, and grilled bread included a more risotto - like rice, caramelized onions (sort of fajita style), bronzed carrots (slices of carrot roasted with blackening seasoning and brown sugar), green beans cooked with tomatoes and onion, very thick pureed
white bean soup, about 5
sweet potato fries, a couple of artichoke hearts, a dab of roasted red peppers, and half of a veggie burger made with black beans and corn.
It is mostly rice, but if I feel like having some naan bread with the curry, then it's almost sure I will put some
potatoes or
sweet potatoes in the curry, I just love to eat
potato stews / curries with bread, reminiscences from my childhood and my grandmother's Romanian cooking where we would eat
