Water molecules
in the xylem, I innocently explained, are linked by bonds that form among their positively and negatively charged poles.
Also, I had been told repeatedly that the water
in xylem tubes is under tension — which sounded like pulling, not pushing, to me.
As the contents leak out, they percolate through the youngest vessels, or «pipes»,
in the xylem, the tree's internal plumbing system.

Designers interested
in using sapwood as a filtering material will also have to find ways to keep the wood damp, or to dry it while retaining the
xylem function.
The
xylem's tiny pores can trap bubbles, preventing them from spreading

in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study found that the species most resistant to drought are those that are better at withstanding stress to the water transport system — composed of internal pipes known as
xylem — that carries water from the roots to the crown.

They say the size of the pores
in sapwood — which contains
