The two major themes that bound
together Protestantism
in American
life found themselves still active, but
in new form.
An inseparable part of the ecumenical task is to move the churches toward visible unity
in, as the
New Delhi statement put it (I abbreviate), «one baptism, one gospel, breaking the one bread, joining
in common prayer, a corporate
life reaching out
in witness and service to all, a ministry and membership accepted by all, and the ability to act and speak
together as occasion requires.»
The Jesus of the postpatriarchal church would more likely be the central figure
in a community of Jewish women and men who participated
in a
new style of
life together, one that profoundly threatened the established patriarchal powers of both Jews and Romans.
Living together, «open» relationships, divorce, material belongings, wealth, church structure and hierarchy, what the «true» church is, the role of women
in the church... the
New Testament has some pretty challenging, and at times conflicting, views on these and other issues.
Although the Black churches led the nation
in a moral crusade and the white churches gave significant support, the church has not led
in thinking through to a
new vision of our
life together in a multi-ethnic society.
Furthermore, there is a centrist political pull that seeks to draw nations
together within a
new political order or geo - political system, defined not
in terms of national sovereignty or cultural identity but
in terms of the economic well - being and styles of
life of certain powerful nations.
But when diversities are accepted within the wholeness of
life that holds
together all things
in its embrace, then,
new possibilities emerge
in history.
It is
in this sense that I consider globalization as one of the major parts of the reality of our
lives and of the common context m which we journey
together towards the
new century and millennium.
(2) The «utopia» of peace and justice (i.e., the expectation of «a
new age») is not an ideal construction from which certain consequences are derived for specific situations but, on the contrary, it is the coming
together in a vision of the specific struggle of the community to solve the conflicts, contradictions and difficulties that they find
in everyday
life — political, social, religious, economic.
Yet each of our
lives is comprised of only a tiny fragment of the entire patterning which, woven

newer syntheses, issues forth as our universe.
If we applied a biblical perspective
in assessing
new technology, and if the same amount of energy and resources had been devoted to the development of inter-personal and community - based communication as have been devoted to technological communication, we may have achieved a richer more satisfying alternative way of

new kind of religious experience, that of a community of Jesus» followers
living and loving
