paper drawing by Trisha Donnelly in a unique frame designed by the artist, a new painted - papier - mâché sculpture by Vincent Fecteau, a large new painting by Paul Sietsema, and three hand - painted bronzes by Rebecca Warren, all exhibited in New York for the first time.
Spanning seventy - five years, the exhibition
includes thirty - six works
on paper by as many artists, from James Castle's found -
paper work incorporating naïve lettering (c. 1935) to a meticulously rendered Jasper Johns
graphite drawing (2010).
Ryden's whimsical work
includes characters studies in oil
on panel and
graphite on paper depicting the personification of pink and green tea leaves, champagne and vodka costumes and Viennese confections in candy - colored tones.
Other works
on display
include Seher Shah's
graphite on paper drawings, Brutalist Traces (2015 - 16), of the modernist architecture of New Delhi; artist Gauri Gill's notebooks entitled «1984» (2005, 2009, 2014), from which are also displayed several photographs of the people and interior spaces of the «Widows Colony» in Tilak Vihar, where families affected by the anti-Sikh riots of 1984 were provided housing by the state; and a series of streetscape photographs by Pablo Bartholomew,
including Man Asleep in Front of Political Graffiti, Calcutta (1978) which embodies how, in South Asia, history inflects the everyday.
The new charcoal and
graphite on paper drawings
included in Material Handling are two separate series based
on images of concrete sewer catch basins and rubber dock bumpers.
Though this exhibition is curated rather than juried, the artists selected represent the range of possibilities for what works
on and of
paper could be,
including an exploration of unique processes and materials capable of making marks — from
graphite and gouache to water, sun, earth, and time.
These paintings
on paper, which often
include notations by the artist in
graphite, provide a unique window into his working process, allowing the viewer to think, along with Albers, through color.
Sikander's primary materials
include graphite, ink, and gouache
on paper, and in 2001 she began working in digital animation, setting her miniatures into motion.
The fifty - seven works in the exhibition can be divided more or less equally into three related groups: eighteen oil paintings done
on linen, all measuring 22 x 28 inches; nineteen oils done
on paper, all measuring 22 x 30 inches; twenty drawings
on paper, most of which measure around 11 x 14 inches, and done in a wide range of materials,
including gouache, colored pencil, crayon, ink, and
graphite.
Also
included in the exhibition are gouache
on paper paintings that reference Sleigh's A.I.R. Group Portrait from 1977 and a series of
graphite drawings that are inspired by texts from Sleigh's archive.
