For example, if you decide to use leg extensions to develop the quadriceps in your program, I'd recommend that you make sure to also
include leg curls for the hamstrings.
This study shows that one way in which we can increase the emphasis on the medial hamstrings during several strength training exercises (
including the leg curl) is to rotate the foot inwards, while rotating the foot outwards emphasises the lateral hamstrings.

I don't have access to this paper, but I would bet a lot of money that the resistance training program they used
included machine - based exercises like
leg extensions and
curls, which we know provide much less of a neuroendocrine response, if they provide one at all.
Weight training: The basic exercises that
include the largest muscle groups or even call into play the entire body as a unit (squats, front squats, split squats, deadlifts, stiff
legged deadlifts, overhead presses, all kinds of rows and core - activation exercises) will have a much greater metabolism stimulating effect than isolation exercises (concentration
curls, calf raises, etc)
These
include lying hip extensions, stability ball
leg curls, planks, kneeling pushups, bird dogs, and side planks.
External oblique muscle activity is higher during a number of dynamic isolation exercises compared to the sit up and
curl up

Buying a few bands will give you the ability to

leg curls, all of which can be done for high volume and in the comfort of your own home.
Traditional (non-accentuated eccentric) alternatives
include stiff -
leg deadlifts,
leg curls, and lunges.
