As we move into ESSA implementation, states and local districts are faced with both challenges and opportunities to plan comprehensive reforms that
include systemic support for principals and other school leaders.

Recently, several prominent national education organizations (
including the NEA, AERA, AFT, and NCTE) have called for addressing equity in schools and society, specifically recommending that we need to highlight the «
systemic patterns of inequity — racism and educational injustice — that impacts our students,» and that educators and school leaders «receive the tools, training, and
support they need to build curricula with substantive exploration of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.»
Issues typically
include: balancing
systemic and individual needs; navigating competing demands on teachers» time; finite financial resources; teacher turnover; the availability of appropriate mentoring and
support; even geography.
Participating cities are launching ambitious plans for change that
include components of the Education Redesign Lab's strategy for
systemic change: creating student - centered, customized learning experiences for students; integrating social, emotional, and health services with education; providing easily accessible, high quality expanded learning and enrichment experiences for all children; and creating governance structures that will
support this integrated model of services.
Using this approach we have
supported systemic change with culturally and linguistically diverse people (
including newly arrived, asylum seeker and refugee people), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, people experiencing addiction, people living with disabilities, and people facing deep community exclusion or past trauma.
Through this outreach, we heard that there is no single solution to this problem; we need a broad and
systemic focus on
supporting and improving teaching and learning, especially in our highest - need schools and for our highest - need students,
including students with disabilities and English learners.

Despite the decline, Schott has done plenty on behalf of the union and AFT to oppose
