The collection spans five millenniums, from the art of
early Japanese cultures around 3000 B.C. through that of the Edo period of the 17th to 19th centuries A.D. -LSB-...] Assembled over half a century and exhibited throughout the world, Mrs. Burke's collection comprises about a thousand artifacts,
including paintings,
prints, sculpture, textiles, lacquerware, ceramics and calligraphy, collectively worth tens of millions of dollars.
Ukiyo - e
prints and books from the 19th to the
early 20th centuries,
including works by woodblock
print masters Hiroshige (1797 - 1858), Hokusai (1760 - 1849) and Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892).
Showing the artist's growth as a painter and his continuing interest in uniting painting and photography to test new strategies of figuration, the series, which debuted in London

includes twenty vintage silver gelatin
prints which capture a wide range of social circles in
early downtown New York.
The Hood's collection of Japanese
prints represents major
print genres and themes,
including actors (yakusha - e), fashionable women (bijinga), perspective (uki - e), landscape (fūkeiga), warriors (musha - e), Japan's 19th - century modernization (kaika - e), and
early 20th - century
prints (shin hanga).
Although by no means exhaustive, this exhibition offers an important opportunity to survey the artist's career,
including his
early «body
print» Spade (Power for the Spade), 1969, and his sardonic riff on Minimalism, Untitled, 1989, a sculpture of fortified - wine bottles.
Lines / Edges: Frank Stella on Paper features a range of Stella's experiments on paper
including early translations of his Black series and shaped canvases, magnificent color woodcuts and screen
prints from the 1980s, and the Moby Dick Deckle Edges, an impressive nine work grouping of large - scale

early 1990s based on Herman Melville's Moby Dick.
