For years now we have been making gradual progress towards the acceptance of the teaching of non-religious worldviews in RE, with the 2004 national framework
including Humanism in national guidance for the first time.
Opening last night's debate, Lord Harrison, argued «that the BBC has failed the humanist community in Britain both in the spirit and in the letter of the Communications Act 2003, which requires the BBC to schedule programmes on religion and other beliefs,
including humanism... The truth is that religious public broadcasting is growing while Anglicanism contracts.»
The British Humanist Association believes that all young people should be free to explore the full range of beliefs and values in Britain,
including Humanism, and that school should be a place for them to explore these issues for themselves.
The BHA is urging all parents, teachers, young people and academics to respond to the consultation and call on the Government to
include the humanism annex.
The rest of the course is based on the study of philosophy and ethics, which the government says can
include humanism and other non-religious beliefs.

The seventh lecture of William James's pragmatism series bore the title «Pragmatism and
Humanism,» and
included the statement: «When we talk of reality «independent» of human thinking, then, it seems a thing very hard to find.»

They are seeking what has been called post-modern paradigms for «an open secular democratic culture» within the framework of a public philosophy (Walter Lippman) or Civil Religion (Robert Bellah) or a new genuine realistic
humanism or at least a body of insights about the nature of being and becoming human, evolved through dialogue among renascent religions, secularist ideologies
including the philosophies of the tragic dimension of existence and disciplines of social and human sciences which have opened themselves to each other in the context of their common sense of historical responsibility and common human destiny.
I find it a bit humorous that the writer did
include «Christian
humanism» and also «religious
humanism» in his ranting way (s)
This supplementary guidance withdraws and replaces parts of the 2013 guidance,
including the part that previously referred to atheism and
humanism.

This followed the publication of a new curriculum framework for RE last year, endorsed by the Secretary of State for Education, which
included non-religious worldviews on an equal footing to each of the principal religions, as well as the issuing of Departmental advice recommending that schools meet the new requirement to promote British values by teaching about «beliefs such as...
humanism» as well as religions.
Forty years of progress in RE,
including last year's RE curriculum framework, make it clear that the systematic study of
humanism contributes to making the subject both rigorous and relevant.
Only annexes on six world religions are
included and an annex on
humanism produced by the BHA at the request of the DfE was not
included.
The draft subject criteria for Religious Studies published for consultation by the Department for Education (DfE) were widely expected to
include an optional annex on
humanism alongside optional annexes on the six principal religions.
The signatories
include philosophers and RE professors, consultants, advisors and teachers,
including professors from Britain's top universities, leading national voices on RE, and classroom teachers already teaching their pupils about
humanism and objecting to its exclusion in the draft criteria:
If collective worship was ended and RE became universally objective, fair and balanced (and
included non-religious views such as
Humanism), community schools would indeed be exactly what we would want a school to be — open and accommodating to all.
