The human lineage, the genus Homo, and its close relatives,
including australopithecines such as the famed Lucy, are together referred to as hominins.

The juvenile is the most complete
australopithecine skeleton yet found from the period: it
includes much of the skull and large parts of an arm, leg and pelvis.
For this reason, a few anthropologists, such as David Begun at the University of Toronto in Canada, have suggested that our ape ancestors spent a formative period in Europe — although they still agree that later hominin evolution,
including that of the
australopithecines and the origin of our own species, occurred solely in Africa.
You know, Lucy is believed to be ancestral to all of the later
Australopithecines species and also our own genus Homo which
includes everything from us to Neandertals, to the little Hobbits of Flores and, you know, we cover all of this in the book, and it's just incredible to see how much new information about all of Lucy's descendants has been uncovered in the past couple of decades, truly an astonishing period for paleoanthropology.

This is used to justify placing all habilis fossils,
including 1470, into the
australopithecines.
The craniofacial index (facial area versus cranial area) of all «habilines»,
including 1470 falls within the
australopithecine range and outside the human range
including erectus.67, 68
Other major finds
included Sts 5, a superb fossil skull, and Sts 14, a partial skeleton which consisted of much of a pelvis, femur, and vertebral column and proved convincingly that
australopithecines had walked upright.
Given either pictures or descriptions of skeletal features of hominids,
including modern human, apes and
australopithecines, students will assign them to their appropriate group.
Remains of
Australopithecines —
including «Lucy» — have been discovered primarily in the Rift Valley of Africa.
