In fact, feeding a bird a diet that is too rich in nutrients such as calcium can cause many health problems,
including hypercalcemia, gout and a decrease in appetite.
While other areas of special interest
include hypercalcemia and hematologic disorders, Dr. Paola has maintained a broad interest in many aspects of small animal internal medicine.

Common clinical signs
included gastrointestinal disease and signs associated with
hypercalcemia.
These
include diabetes mellitus (though it is not clear whether pancreatitis precedes diabetes), acute
hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood, usually from a calcium infusion or poisoning rather than diet or supplements), hyperlipidemia (high fat content in the blood, again usually due to metabolic disorder rather than diet), hypothyroidism, and Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism).
Hypercalcemia is a serious electrolyte abnormality caused by excessive exposure to or ingestion of vitamin D. Symptoms of vitamin D toxicosis, which can affect multiple organ functions, usually occur within 24 to 72 hours of ingestion and
include anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, polyuria, polydipsia, depression and weakness.
Factors that can contribute to the development of pancreatitis can also be infections; metabolic disorders
including hyperlipidemia (high amounts of lipid in the blood) and
hypercalcemia (high amounts of calcium in the blood); and / or trauma and shock.
Symptoms — Depending on how big the mass is, clinical signs
include perianal discomfort, swelling,
hypercalcemia, polyuria (urge to urinate more frequently), polydipsia (increased levels of thirst), anorexia (symptom of poor appetite) from the superior to the inferior aperture of the pelvis), vomiting and muscle weakness.
My other current research
includes identifying causal variants of cystathioninuria, vitamin D - dependent rickets, and idiopathic
hypercalcemia in cats, and hyperoxaluria in dogs.
